Volunteers in the Field: Brown Bear Research PDF Print E-mail

Staff and VolunteerOn Kodiak Island people often live and work in close proximity to the local population of brown bear; the 1.9 million acre Refuge has the highest density of bear anywhere in the world, about one for every 1.5 square miles.  While bear sightings are common, it is more rare to experience the rugged landscape from a bear's perspective: foraging for food, ranging across mountains and through alder thickets, and bedding down in remote meadows...

2010 is the first year of a two-year study to collar and track several Kodiak Brown Bears within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, researching their movement patterns, habitat, and food availability.  A diverse group of volunteers have contributed their field experience and time to assist Refuge biologists in collecting data throughout the summer - find out more about a week in their season!

Summer 2010 Volunteers at the Visitor's Center PDF Print E-mail

Our summer season has entered full swing!  We are lucky to have three Student Conservation Association (SCA) interns working with our Salmon Camp program, as well as an SCA intern to assist us at the information desk and develop our summer FUN (Families Understanding Nature) and Happy Trails programs.  Thanks to these dedicated college students and recent grads who are committed to bringing excellent environmental education opportunities to Kodiak families!

We also have several wonderful local volunteers who bring their expertise to the Visitor's Center as regular docents; if you are interested in assisting with Visitor Center programs or greeting visitors at the information desk, we'd love to have your help!  Currently looking for extra assistance during cruise ship visits, weekends, and during our Salmon Camp Friday barbeques-  if you have talent with a grill, you could be our next Grill Master!  Please contact Lisa Hupp at 487-0285 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   for more information.
