Youth Conservation Corps
Employment Period: June 14 – August 13, 2010
Wage: ~ $10 per hour
Work Week: 16.5-40 hours per week, mostly Monday- Friday. A typical workday will begin at 8:30am and end at 2:30pm (5.5 hour workday). Applicants must be available for overnight field work in Kodiak Refuge, which may last up to five days/four nights.
Major Duties: work, learn and earn together as a team to accomplish public outreach with the cruise ship and ferry visitors that are visiting Kodiak Refuge Visitor Center this summer. In addition to regular public outreach at the Refuge Visitor Center, enrollees will participate in field projects that further the conservation efforts of Kodiak Refuge bear research, fisheries research, and cabin maintainence, as well as other special projects.
Requirements: To be eligible for the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC), you must…
1) be at least 15 years of age and no older than 19 years of age during the period of employment, June 14 to August 13.
2) be able to work the entire nine weeks.
3) wear the refuge uniform in a neat, clean manner. Due to safety considerations, no shorts, or open-toed shoes are permitted.
4) have housing in the community.
5) be prepared to work outdoors on rainy days and indoors on sunny days!
6) have transportation on a daily basis to and from the refuge the Refuge Visitor Center.
7) be in good health and physically fit. A health certificate will be required for enrollment in the program.

High school students 15 to 18 years of age are eligible to apply.
To qualify for consideration, all applicants must submit an essay which answers the following question in 200 - 250 words: “What special skill or skills (cartooning, photography, viedography, computer, writing, artistic, etc.) do you have that would help you work as a team to connect people with nature?”

Once enrollees are selected, they must be able to work the full 9-week period.
Finalists will be notified by phone the last week of April, 2010.
When all positions are filled, any applicant who is not selected will be notified by letter.
